Case Study Sasha

History: Not much is known about Sasha other than she was found with her pup.
Assessment: I gave Sasha a dry aired duck fillet and she instantly became my friend. Sasha is one of the most loving dogs I have met. When I heard that her 5-month pup had recently been adopted I wanted to provide an outlet that was fun. Upon observation I saw her teats were swollen and she was still producing milk, this was of concern to me, and I highlighted to the shelter owner that she needed to see a vet.

The shelter owner had informed me that Sasha was dog reactive, given my concerns she may be experiencing underlying pain this was not the time to see how she responded to dogs. Nor was it appropriate to fit her for a harness and take her for a walk outside the shelter.
Instead, I offered her freework in the form of likimat which I needed to distract her from as she would have easily started to bite it, the salmon paste was clearly a huge draw. We did the forager pocket together and there is nothing better than hearing the drum like noise of a dog properly using their nose. Her favourite station was the snuffle mat which she did twice. Sasha is an intelligent dog and took to the freework instantly with big tail wags and would benefit from mental stimulation.
Behavioural Plan:
· Once Sasha has been examined by a vet and I have a clearer picture then I would continue do 1-2-1 freework session with Sasha adding in more stations at different levels and with different textures.
· Following the all clear health wise from the vet and once the swelling has gone down, I would like to take Sasha for a walk outside of the shelter to observe her reactions to unfamiliar dogs and people.
Potential adopter: Sasha is an affectionate girl but until she has been assessed by a vet and I am able to observe Sasha’s behaviour in different contexts I’m unable to provide additional advice.
